Farstruck (adj.)
The inexplicable desire, or even necessity, to seek out a home far away from the majority of one’s friends and family—whether literally in terms of distance or figuratively in terms of lifestyle.
“I wish my kids lived closer, but it seems they’ve always been farstruck, ever since going to college out of state.”
Feeling fascinated or greatly impressed by those living abroad or in an otherwise unconventional way.
“I am totally farstruck by Emily’s adventures through Portugal. I love living vicariously through her!”
(less common) The feeling a writer gets when a new idea or musing captures their attention and transports them far away from the present reality into a private world of profound thought and deep focus.
“I got randomly farstruck last night and ended up writing until 2am.”
About
Hi, my name is Emily Grubman and I’m a writer, naming consultant, permaculturista, yoga teacher, and reluctant nomad—among other things, of course.
This newsletter started as a way to keep in touch with my already-scattered community as I set out in search of a new home at the beginning of 2023. But the more I’ve traveled, the more friends I’ve made, the more I’ve realized that—even when I do eventually find my place in this world—I’ll always live far from at least someone I love.
In lieu of social media, this is where I share my nomadic updates, travel experiences, and, dare I say, recommendations. It’s also where I occasionally share non-travel-related thoughts and reflections.
